About Honesberie

Honesberie Farms is a mixed grassland and arable farm situated in Warwickshire, close to the Northamptonshire border and between the villages of Priors Hardwick and Priors Marston.
The farm supports a pedigree Limousin herd of 80 cows and followers as well as an arable rotation.

In 2006, Nigel founded Honesberie Limousins following the dispersal of Honesberie Holsteins.

It is the attention to detail this high-yielding dairy herd demanded that has been so beneficial to Nigel in the establishment of the pedigree Limousin herd.

Honesberie Holsteins were exclusively Canadian-bred with both embryos and heifers imported to the herd, all with an emphasis on type and family classification. Top Honesberie cows were flushed with the subsequent heifers sold at Carlisle and Beeston. In Nigel’s words: “We bred for type and fed for milk.”

All cows were categorised annually by Holstein classification and future selection was guided by these results, which concentrated on these key aspects:
  • legs, feet and locomotion
  • mammary system
  • dairy strength and ability to convert forage into milk
  • conformation with room for vital organs to operate
  • temperament
  • better calving ease and healthy recovery following calving

The many years of breeding and rearing pedigree Holsteins has enabled the farm to quickly establish a well-respected and successful beef breeding program at Honesberie.

“We wanted to follow this format with breeding Limousins, explains Nigel.

Nigel decided the French system of classification was similar to that used in the Holstein breed and so has sourced his foundation stock exclusively from France and Grange Limousins, Daventry.
